"Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3, Testing" is a series of brown paper bags masks, referencing the tradition of "brown bag testing" as practiced both within African American communities and externally by white communities. The "brown bag test" serves as a dividing line denoting racial purity for those darker than the bag or acceptable melanin levels for those lighter than the bag. The test has survived as a rule of thumb for notions of racial mapping and the parameters of beauty for African Americans in practices and fictions. With this in mind, Olujimi confronts contemporary systems of racial quantification through examining current racial markers and misnomers.
