Testing, Testing, 1, 2, 3, Testing is a series of brown paper bags masks, referencing the tradition of "brown bag testing" as imposed both within African American communities and externally by white communities. The "brown bag test" serves as dividing line denoting racial purity for those darker than the bag or acceptable melanin for the lighter than the bag. The test has survived as rule of thumb for notions of racial mapping and the parameters of beauty for African Americans in practices and fictions. With this in mind, I confront contemporary systems of racial quantification through examining current racial markers and misnomers.
